The crown jewel of Bergen County family outings, packing a real zoo, a miniature train, a carousel, and pony rides into one walkable park. Kids can meet bison, spider monkeys, and reptiles at the Bergen County Zoo, then burn off energy at one of the county's biggest playgrounds. A single visit can fill a whole day, with something for every age.
Good for: All ages (especially 2-10) · Parking and park entry are free, but the zoo, train, carousel ($3 each), and pony rides charge separately — bring cash/card; weekday mornings beat the crowds. Train/carousel run ~April–late November.
Directions ↗Sprawling over 800 acres along Overpeck Creek, this is the park for wide-open space, water, and room to ride. Little ones love the big climbing playground while older kids and parents take the flat, stroller- and bike-friendly paths. A kayak and canoe launch makes it an easy on-ramp to a first paddling adventure.
Good for: All ages · Free, plentiful parking (700+ spaces near the Ridgefield Park boat launch). Kayak Center runs Fri–Sun + holidays, daily mid-June–Labor Day.
Directions ↗A long green ribbon following the Saddle River for ~6 miles, linking several family areas with one continuous flat bike-and-walking path. Each section has its own personality — from the duck pond and turtles at Wild Duck Pond to the little waterfall at Dunkerhook — so you can pick a different spot every weekend.
Good for: All ages · Free parking at every area. For short legs, start at one lot (Wild Duck Pond or Otto Pehle) rather than the full 6 miles; bring bikes/scooters — the trail is stroller-smooth.
Directions ↗The spot for a classic summer swim day: a lifeguarded lake, sandy beach areas, and shady picnic groves. The upper lake's Splash Zone inflatable water obstacle course is a huge hit with older kids and tweens. Pack a cooler and make a full day of it.

Directions ↗A 1,300+-acre wooded reservation that does it all year-round. In winter it's a beginner-friendly ski, snowboard, and snow tubing hill perfect for kids' first time on the slopes; the rest of the year it's free hiking, disc golf, and archery.
Good for: All ages; tubing/lessons great 4+ · Winter snow tickets book up fast on weekends/snow days — reserve online ahead. Off-season the park is free and quieter midweek.
Directions ↗With 4,000 acres and miles of trails, the go-to for a real nature outing without driving far. The short, mostly flat walk to Scarlet Oak Pond is doable for little legs; bigger kids can push on to the waterfall. It feels like deep wilderness right off Route 202.
Good for: All ages; pond loop for toddlers, waterfall 5+ · Lot fills by mid-morning on nice weekends — come early. For the waterfall, follow the yellow trail; wear real sneakers, it gets rocky.

Directions ↗A 150-acre pocket of wild forest on the Palisades ridge, with 3.6 miles of self-guiding trails to a cascading stream, a pond, wildflower meadows, and dramatic quarry cliffs. The Raptor Aviary shows ambassador birds up close — and it's completely free, perfect for a spontaneous outing.
Good for: All ages, toddlers–tweens · Free (donations welcome). Trails are natural and hilly — a carrier works better than a stroller.
Directions ↗A Bergen County gem on an 81-acre former farm, centered on a big duck pond ringed by an easy loop and boardwalk. Kids spot ducks, swans, and peacocks roaming the grounds, while the indoor museum houses turtles, fish, and bunnies. An easy half-day for all ages.

Directions ↗A 107-acre freshwater wetland and one of NJ's premier birdwatching spots, with 240+ bird species recorded. An easy, mostly flat 1.2-mile loop circles the marsh past three observation platforms where kids can scan for herons, hawks, and ducks. A peaceful, screen-free hour or two.
Good for: Ages 4+; calm, patient kids · Free, dawn–dusk. No restrooms and no dogs — plan a stop first. Bring binoculars.
Directions ↗A cozy 14-acre NJ Audubon sanctuary around a historic 1700s farmhouse visitor center. The short, easy half-mile loop and a winter bird-feeding station make it ideal for younger children and first-time hikers, with hands-on exhibits inside.
